How Susan Boyle makes one dream again
I chanced upon this article in Yahoo (where I get my updates due to our no-TV-rule) about a 47-year old unemployed lady who blew everyone away in Britain’s Got Talent. Of course I had to search for the clip and even after reading that, what I saw and heard was totally surreal! it literally made me cry a river, thankfully no one was around to see me do that.
Just like what one of the judges said, her “cheeky grin” belied what was to come… and she knew it.
Her choice of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserable by Fantine when she was alone, unemployed and destitute was, really her song. To see everyone’s face of derision turn to shock and open admiration (including Simon’s raised eyebrows and exasperation to open-mouthed shock however slightly) with just her opening notes, was a vindication and a much-deserved new beginning. The poignancy, the drama, and the voice was not lost in all the viewers and left everyone standing, cheering and in tears in the theater, and me in my headphones.
Why do I like her? In that case, why did everyone else? She showed how we can all dream, have the courage to go after it regardless of our age and circumstances and hold on to it, one day it will come true.
It brings us to the questions, what dreams did we allow to die? and what dreams should we have the courage to hold on to.
One can also ask, why only now? Maybe it’s just simply her time.
For me, this could not have come at a better time, just when I was feeling quite down, this helped put everything back. Maybe it will also do that for you.
Be ready to cry, here’s the link to Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream”
