What makes Mothers special?
I grew up in Malabon, where we are very particular with our Pancit Malabon, we know how it tastes and looks like and if it were not up to the original, it just doesn’t feel right. Well, my mother has was able to get the feel of it, complete with the banana leaves! (too bad we didn’t have a bilao)

Her efforts did not only show how OC my mother can be, as all mothers are, as I am as well. But it also revealed to me much more.
Our mothers all have their quirks, as we have ours. We may not always agree with them, actually we usually don’t hehehe. But one thing is for sure, regardless of differences in, they are special to us.
We have all heard about the saying, “When we are children, we wanted to be just like our parents, when we are growing up we didn’t want to be anything like them, and when we have, we ARE our parents.” These days, I am finding out just how true those words are, I suppose each one of us will have that revelation sooner or later if it has not happened yet.
For me, it happened last weekend. On Saturdays, we spend the whole day with my parents, its my “unofficial rest day” because it’s my mother who prepares all the meals. (You need to know my children are quite a duo of non-stop munching machines) Well in spite of the “demands” of my little darlings, my mother, I think relishes the idea of cooking up a feast for them. This time, her project was to make Pancit Palabok. From the looks of it, (with all the pans in the sink) it was really hard work.

I totally realized where I got my “need” to do things in a certain way, especially for my kids (a.k.a. OC). It’s not just a matter of doing something but there is a need to do it beautifully. Its the choice of it becomming a chore, something to get over with and it becomming a joyful task to share the fruits of one’s efforts.
Yes, it took a while for her to finish this, but it was all worth it even without tasting it. Yes she did say it was Pancit Palabok, but I rather enjoyed it better as Pancit Malabon hehehe.
I share her joy for having able to do this, (it’s her first try), I celebrate her efforts for being the mother that she is.
That’s just one thing that makes her special, I hope you also take time to see and appreciate your mothers today. And realize the things that makes her special.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mama!
By the way, for trivia, one fo the best Pancit Malabon for true-blooded Malabon citizens, is Nanay’s Pancit Malabon.
