Food Find(agains) at the 17th Buy Pinoy Fair
Maybe because part of my heritage is from Bicol, or maybe I got used to eating pili at an early age, but I’m really drawn to pili pastries.
At the 17th Buy Pinoy, aside from home accessories, I was particularly looking forward to getting my fix on my old-time favorite pastries. My OTOP (one-town-one-product) favorites are the Pili tart, Masaporidas and pandecillos.
Something interesting though, even if its OTOP, each baker/manufacturer has their own distinct version of it and I get to have my favorite suppliers as well. Unfortunately, my pandecillos suki was not there and the other versions were just too dry, so maybe next time.
The Pili tart I got from Janah’s. It’s just the right sweetness and creaminess from the yema with bits of pili to add texture while the crust is crisp, so you have a great combination of crispy-chewiness that makes it hard to stop from just one pack of tarts.
For the Masaporidas, I got it from Bicol Harvest of Daet, Camarines Norte. It’s almost the same with the one of Janah’s except for the price. They sell it at only P20 versus P35 with Janah. I like Masaporidas because of the combination of crisp texture and melt-in-your-mouth creaminess afterwards. It’s like uraro but it doesn’t feel like you are ready to do the try-whistling-while-you’re-eating-challenge.
One surprisingly good find is the dehydrated pineapple bits of Queens Choice. I was a bit skeptical at first because the packaging did not look particularly enticing, even the bits of pineapple was not that pretty either, but I was curious.
Imagine eating a good raisin, all crinkly outside then all juiciness inside. That’s how the dehydrated pineapple was, all unappetizingly crinkly with (what looks to be) a dusting of white powdered sugar then a surprising sweet-not-the sour burst of pineapple juiciness ! Even my little girl wanted more! so I really know its a winner.
Unfortunately, my pandecillos suki was not there and the other supplier’s versions were just too dry for me to want to stave off my craving for it. Well, maybe next time.
